The Anti Corruption Coalition of Uganda (ACCU) brings together 70 civil society organizations, individuals, religious leaders, academicians, media practitioners and key institutions involved in the fight against corruption in Uganda.

It was formed in January 1999 and registered as an NGO under the NGO statute which anti-corruption activists can enhance their capacity to tackle corruption and build a strong voice and force that can effectively engage government on issues of corruption.

(Since its inception in 1999, it has been lobbying and advocating for appropriate anti corruption national policies, punitive measures, research, and exposure of corrupt activities; as well as the capacity building, coalition building and mobilization of the Ugandan citizens to fight corruption.)?

Vision: A just and corruption free society

Mission: To contribute to poverty reduction by empowering civil society to actively fight corruption in Uganda

Overall Objectives of ACCU:

To ensure that misuse of entrusted powers by political leaders, public servants, private sector, religious authorities and civil society is eradicated.

 

Strategic Objectives of ACCU:

  1. Exposure of corruption cases by civil society.
  2. To provide a platform for civil society to hold government responsible for improving transparency and accountability in public service delivery.
  3. To equip civil society with skills, knowledge and methods of effectively addressing corruption.
  4. To increase information accessibility to members of the general public.

 

Core Functions of ACCU:

  1. Coordination of member activities.
  2. Research and advocacy on corruption related issues.
  3. Building the capacity of civil society.
  4. Facilitating information sharing and communication.

 

Core Values:

ACCU’s strategic direction is based on its core values that form the basis for all its operations and these shall be upheld in all that it does. Those values are:

  1. Integrity: ACCU will carry out its activities in an honest and truthful manner.
  2. Transparency: ACCU will be open at all times on dealing with all partners in the fight against corruption.
  3. Accountability: ACCU will take full responsibility for its actions and will always be answerable to the civil society and to its partners.
  4. Non-discrimination: ACCU will endeavour to espouse fairness in all its interventions.
  5. Justice: ACCU is committed to promoting fairness in all its dealings.
  6. Solidarity: ACCU upholds that the struggle against corruption needs close collaboration with others.
  7. Objectivity: ACCU will work in full judgement of its actions based on the well-consulted opinion of its members.

 

Definition of Corruption & Various Types:

  1. By gross corruption is meant situations in which large sums of money change hands or services are performed, and in which the advantages one hopes to acquire are illegal or infringe established norms or business principles.
  2. Greasing and minor bribes are often referred to as petty corruption.
  3. A typical example of petty corruption is handing over a small sum of money to get a public servant actually to do his job. "Petty" implies that one is not encouraging an illicit act.
  4. ACCU Definition: Use of public resources for private gain.
